What does Sober October? mean

What does Sober October mean?

Sober October, November, Remember December, Dry January, Zero ABV February. We'd say we'll stay sober until March.

If you want to start small, start with Sober October and see how things are going. If you want to continue, you already know how it works. But what does Sober October actually mean? As the name suggests, it's about abstaining from alcohol in October. Dry January is basically for beginners in abstinence. If you really dare to do something, you can spend October alcohol-free. Without New Year's goals that you won't keep anyway, without peer pressure, without constantly checking in with friends. Sober October is for you.

Where does it originate?

Sober October was originally launched in Australia as a campaign to protect children and young people from alcohol abuse and to raise funds for educational work.

The UK's "Go Sober For October" charity works in a similar way. Here you can buy a "Golden Ticket" for £15 to buy yourself out of Sober October for a day. The proceeds then go to Macmillan Cancer Support.

Why should you take part in Sober October?

Staying alcohol-free has many benefits: no hangovers, no blackouts and no drunk texts, and better physical and mental well-being.

Increased physical well-being

abstinence from alcohol  makes your skin glow and look healthier. Why is that? Alcohol dehydrates the skin and makes it  dry out. Dr. Richard de Visser from the University of Sussex found in a study that the skin condition of 54% of participants improved after just one month without alcohol. The reason for this is that alcohol promotes the formation of skin imperfections and makes the skin look dull.

In addition to improving the appearance of your skin, abstaining from alcohol also has a positive effect on your immune system, as the Spectrum of Science reported. Alcohol suppresses the immune system and we become more susceptible to infections because our sensitive temperature perception is disturbed. It makes us feel the cold less, so we can catch a cold more easily.

Positive effects on the mind

Another important point: the psyche. By abstaining from alcohol, mental health improves and you generally become more emotionally stable.

It is a widespread myth that alcohol helps you sleep better. The Sleep Foundation found that alcohol disrupts our sleep rhythm. Alcohol reduces the quality of sleep and not only dehydrates your body, but also energy. Those who take more alcohol-free drinks will feel more rested, relaxed and productive. According to the German Medical Journal, there is even an improvement in our memory, our ability to learn and concentrate, and our decision-making.

Does Sober October mean giving up pleasure?

Our answer: absolutely not! Nowadays there are numerous non-alcoholic alternatives. Whether beer, wine or spirits. Alcohol-free no longer means foregoing pleasure.
